2. FULL STORY — PART 1
It was late at night, and a married couple was settling down after a long day.
The wife was already curled comfortably beneath the blankets, ready to fall asleep. Her husband, however, had other plans. He switched on the bedside lamp, picked up his book, and began reading.
For a while, everything was perfectly quiet.
Then, every so often, the husband reached over toward his wife for just a moment before returning his attention to his book.
The first time, she ignored it.
The second time, she noticed.
By the third time, she started wondering what exactly he was trying to communicate.
Surely, she thought, he wasn’t simply being affectionate for no reason.
She waited.
Then it happened again.
The wife slowly sat up, looking at him with growing curiosity.
Her husband remained completely absorbed in his book, turning his attention back to the page as though nothing unusual had happened.
She began to suspect that he was trying to start some kind of romantic moment without actually saying anything.
So she decided to respond.
3. FULL STORY — PART 2
The wife got out of bed and stood beside him.
Her husband finally looked up from his book.
He stared at her, completely puzzled.
“Why are you getting up?” he asked.
She looked at him incredulously.
“You’ve been reaching over to me several times,” she replied. “I thought you were trying to tell me something.”
The husband blinked.
“Tell you something?”
“Yes!”
She crossed her arms, clearly annoyed now.
“You kept reaching over, then going right back to your book. What was I supposed to think?”
The husband glanced down at his book, then back at his wife.
For a moment, neither of them said anything.
Finally, the wife demanded, “Well, if you weren’t trying to get my attention, what were you doing?”
The husband looked genuinely surprised that there had been any confusion at all.
Then he calmly explained what had actually been happening.
4. FULL STORY — PART 3
“I was turning the pages,” he said.
His wife stared at him.
“What?”
“The pages kept sticking together,” he explained. “So I needed a little moisture on my finger to separate them.”
There was a long silence.
The wife slowly looked at the book.
Then she looked back at her husband.
“You mean all that time…”
He nodded.
“I was trying to read.”
She stood there in disbelief.
The husband, apparently unaware of how ridiculous the situation had become, simply turned another page and continued reading.
His wife shook her head.
“Unbelievable.”
He looked over at her.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
She climbed back into bed, pulled the blanket up, and turned away from him.
After a few seconds, the husband switched the lamp slightly closer to his side and continued reading.
The room became quiet again.
But this time, his wife was wide awake.
5. ENDING
Sometimes, one person thinks they’re sending a very clear message while the other person has absolutely no idea what’s going on.
And sometimes, what looks like a complicated romantic signal is nothing more than someone struggling with a stubborn book page.
The husband kept reading.
His wife kept staring at the ceiling.
Neither of them was going to forget that bedtime misunderstanding anytime soon.
