The Duck Who Had the Perfect Name

2. FULL STORY — PART 1

It was a quiet morning at the local courthouse when three ducks found themselves standing before a very serious judge.

Their offense?

They had been caught playing in a pond where they were apparently not supposed to be.

The judge looked over the paperwork, adjusted his glasses, and called the first duck forward.

The duck waddled up nervously.

“What is your name?” the judge asked.

“My name is Quack,” the duck replied.

“And what were you doing in the pond?”

“I was blowing bubbles in the water.”

The judge frowned thoughtfully.

“Blowing bubbles in a pond you weren’t supposed to be in,” he said. “Three days in jail.”

The first duck lowered his head and waddled away.

Then the judge called the second duck.

“What is your name?”

“Quack Quack,” the duck answered.

The judge raised an eyebrow.

“And were you also blowing bubbles in the pond?”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

The judge sighed.

“Apparently, you ducks have a real bubble-blowing problem.”

He looked at his papers and declared, “Three days in jail.”

The second duck waddled away to join his friend.

Then the courtroom became completely quiet.

The third duck stepped forward.

The judge looked at him carefully.

After hearing the first two names and their identical excuses, the judge thought he had figured out the pattern.

He leaned forward.

“Let me guess,” he said. “Your name is Quack Quack Quack?”

The duck shook his head.

“No, Your Honor.”

The judge looked puzzled.

“Well, then, what is your name?”

The duck smiled.

“My name is Bubbles.”

And suddenly, the entire courtroom understood exactly what was going on.

3. FULL STORY — PART 2

The judge stared at the duck for a moment.

He glanced toward the first two ducks, then back at the third.

The courtroom was silent.

The bailiff struggled to keep a straight face.

Even the judge’s serious expression began to crack.

“You mean,” the judge said slowly, “your name is actually Bubbles?”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“And you were in the pond?”

“Yes.”

“And what were you doing?”

The duck proudly answered, “Blowing bubbles.”

The judge put his hand over his mouth.

For several seconds, nobody said a word.

The first duck, Quack, looked at Bubbles as though he had just witnessed the greatest courtroom strategy in duck history.

Quack Quack nodded approvingly.

The judge finally leaned back in his chair.

“I see.”

He picked up his papers and read them again, hoping there was some legal reason that would help him make sense of the situation.

There wasn’t.

He looked at Bubbles one more time.

“So let me understand this. The other two ducks were named Quack and Quack Quack, and both were blowing bubbles.”

“That is correct, Your Honor.”

“And you are named Bubbles, and you were also blowing bubbles.”

“Exactly.”

The judge sighed.

“I should have seen that coming.”

A few people in the courtroom began laughing.

The bailiff turned away so nobody could see him grinning.

Even Quack and Quack Quack started laughing.

Bubbles simply stood there proudly, pleased that his name had finally been appreciated.

The judge tried to restore order.

“All right,” he said, tapping his gavel. “Enough laughing.”

The courtroom became quiet again.

The judge looked at all three ducks.

“I have learned an important lesson today.”

The ducks waited.

“Never assume a pattern is going to continue just because the first two examples look identical.”

Quack nodded.

Quack Quack nodded.

Bubbles nodded too.

The judge looked at Bubbles.

“And I suppose you think you’re getting out of here because of that clever little name?”

Bubbles smiled.

“I was hoping you’d say that.”

The judge shook his head.

“You ducks are certainly an unusual group.”

Then he looked down at the paperwork one last time.

After a long pause, he smiled.

“Case dismissed.”

The three ducks immediately waddled toward the courthouse doors.

Quack was the first to speak.

“That went pretty well.”

Quack Quack agreed.

“Definitely better than three days in jail.”

Bubbles puffed out his chest proudly.

“I told you my name would come in handy someday.”

The three ducks waddled off together, heading back toward the pond.

Behind them, the judge watched them leave and shook his head with a smile.

He had presided over countless cases, but he suspected he would remember the day three ducks taught him the importance of never judging a name too quickly.

5. ENDING

And so the three ducks returned to their pond.

Quack was Quack.

Quack Quack was Quack Quack.

And Bubbles?

Well, Bubbles was Bubbles.

Sometimes the simplest punchline is hiding in plain sight.
