The Most Misunderstood Bedtime Habit
1. Title
The Most Misunderstood Bedtime Habit
2. FULL STORY β PART 1
It was late at night, and the house had finally gone quiet.
A married couple had settled into bed after a long day. The wife was already curled beneath the blankets, ready to fall asleep, while her husband switched on the small lamp beside the bed.
He picked up his book and began reading.
For a few minutes, everything was peaceful.
Then, without taking his eyes from the page, the husband reached over and briefly touched his wife’s hand.
She glanced at him but said nothing.
A few minutes later, he did it again.
Then again.
Each time, it lasted only a moment before he returned his attention to his book.
The wife began wondering what he was trying to communicate.
Surely he wasn’t doing it accidentally.
Maybe he was trying to get her attention without interrupting his reading.
She waited.
He reached over once more.
She finally sat up, looking at him with a mixture of curiosity and expectation.
Her husband looked completely absorbed in his book.
That somehow made the situation even more confusing.
3. FULL STORY β PART 2
The wife decided she had figured it out.
She got out of bed and stood beside him.
Her husband looked up from his book, completely puzzled.
“Why did you get up?” he asked.
She stared at him.
“You’re the one who’s been doing something strange all night!”
He blinked.
“I have?”
“Yes!”
She pointed toward the book.
“You keep reaching over to me, then going right back to reading.”
The husband looked genuinely confused.
“I don’t understand.”
She sighed.
“I thought you were trying to get my attention.”
He glanced down at his book, then back at her.
“Why would you think that?”
“Because you’ve done it several times!”
For a moment, neither of them said anything.
Then the husband suddenly realized what she meant.
His eyes widened.
“Oh!”
The wife folded her arms.
“Yes. Oh.”
He began laughing.
She did not find it nearly as funny.
“What’s so funny?”
He held up his fingers.
“I wasn’t trying to get your attention.”
“Then what were you doing?”
4. FULL STORY β PART 3
The husband held up the book and demonstrated.
“I was having trouble turning the pages.”
The wife stared at him.
“What?”
“My fingers were getting dry from the paper. So every now and then, I was touching your hand because yours felt warmer.”
She looked at him in disbelief.
“You mean all that time…”
He nodded.
“I was just trying to turn the pages more easily.”
There was a long silence.
The wife slowly climbed back into bed and pulled the blanket up around herself.
Her husband looked at her.
“So… are you okay?”
She gave him a look.
“I’m fine.”
He returned to his book.
After a few seconds, he reached toward her again.
She immediately pulled her hand away.
“Don’t even think about it.”
He burst out laughing.
“Okay, okay!”
She shook her head.
“Honestly, after all these years, you’d think I would know what you’re doing.”
He smiled.
“Apparently not.”
And that was the night they both learned an important lesson:
Sometimes the simplest explanation is also the funniest one.
5. ENDING
The husband went back to reading.
The wife turned off the lamp.
A few seconds later, from the darkness, she said:
“Just so we’re clearβif you need help turning pages, use a bookmark.”
Her husband laughed so hard that he nearly dropped the book.
And finally, she laughed too.
It had been nothing more than a ridiculous misunderstandingβbut years later, it would still be one of those little stories they remembered whenever they needed a good laugh.Β
