1. Title

The Ice Cream Truck Was the Real Problem

2. FULL STORY — PART 1

Grandpa died at 99, and Katie was trying her best to understand what had happened.

She sat quietly beside Grandma at the kitchen table, looking at the old wedding photograph hanging on the wall.

Finally, Katie asked, “Grandma… what happened to Grandpa?”

Grandma sighed, looked toward the window, and gave a little smile.

“He had a heart attack.”

Katie’s eyes widened.

“Oh, Grandma. I’m so sorry.”

Grandma nodded.

“It happened while we were being intimate.”

Katie nearly dropped her cup.

“At your age?!”

Grandma chuckled.

“Your grandfather and I had our little routine. We only did it when the church bells rang.”

Katie blinked.

“The church bells?”

“Yes,” Grandma said. “In on the ding… out on the dong.”

Katie stared at her grandmother in complete disbelief.

Grandma wiped away a tear.

“He was doing just fine, too.”

Katie leaned closer.

“So… what happened?”

Grandma looked toward the front window.

“That’s where the ice cream truck comes into the story.”

Katie frowned.

“The ice cream truck?”

Grandma nodded slowly.

“You see, your grandfather always loved ice cream. Vanilla was his favorite, although he claimed chocolate was better whenever the grandchildren were around.”

Katie laughed.

“That sounds like Grandpa.”

“It was,” Grandma said. “Anyway, we were enjoying our quiet afternoon when the church bells started ringing.”

Katie covered her face.

“Grandma, please…”

“I’m only telling you what happened,” Grandma replied with a grin.

“So, the bells started.”

“Ding…”

“Dong…”

“And everything was perfectly fine.”

Grandma paused dramatically.

“Then we heard music outside.”

Katie already knew where this was going.

“The ice cream truck?”

“The ice cream truck.”

Grandma said Grandpa suddenly became distracted.

“He heard that familiar little melody and said, ‘Wait! I think they have those strawberry popsicles today!’”

Katie burst out laughing.

“You’re kidding!”

“I wish I were.”

Grandma shook her head.

“Your grandfather tried to get up too quickly because he was determined not to miss that truck.”

Katie stared at her.

“And then?”

Grandma sighed.

“That’s when his heart gave out.”

Katie sat there silently for a moment.

“So Grandpa didn’t die because of the church bells?”

Grandma shook her head.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Then what killed him?”

Grandma smiled sadly.

“Apparently, at 99, chasing an ice cream truck is more dangerous than anything else.”

Katie started laughing so hard she had to put her cup down.

Grandma continued, “And the worst part was that the truck stopped right in front of the house.”

“You mean he never even got the ice cream?”

“No.”

Grandma looked toward the driveway.

“But the ice cream man gave me a free popsicle afterward.”

Katie laughed.

“Grandma!”

“What? Your grandfather would have wanted me to have it.”

Katie shook her head.

“I can’t believe this is how Grandpa went.”

Grandma smiled.

“He lived 99 years, sweetheart. He had a wonderful marriage, a beautiful family, and a life full of memories.”

She paused.

“And right up until the end, he still had enough energy to chase after something he loved.”

Katie smiled.

“I guess that sounds like Grandpa.”

“It does.”

5. ENDING

That evening, Katie helped Grandma clean up the kitchen.

As they finished, they suddenly heard a familiar melody coming from down the street.

Grandma froze.

Katie looked at her.

“Grandma…”

Grandma slowly reached for her purse.

“I’m getting there first this time.”

Katie burst out laughing.

“Grandma, you’re 92!”

Grandma grabbed her keys.

“And I intend to make it to 93.”

Katie followed her out the door, laughing all the way.

Behind them, the old wedding photograph remained on the wall.

Grandpa was smiling in it.

And somehow, Katie thought, he probably would have been laughing too.
