1. Title
The Third Son-in-Law Knew Better
2. FULL STORY — PART 1
A mother-in-law decided to test her three sons-in-law to find out which one was the nicest.
She had always wondered which of the three men truly cared about her.
One afternoon, she invited her first son-in-law to take a walk with her along the river.
They chatted about family, the weather, and everything else a mother-in-law usually finds a reason to discuss.
Then, without warning, she jumped into the river.
“Help!” she cried.
Her first son-in-law didn’t hesitate.
He immediately jumped in after her, pulled her safely out of the water, and made sure she was all right.
The next morning, he walked outside and froze.
Sitting proudly in his driveway was a brand-new Chevy Malibu.
Tucked beneath the windshield wiper was a small note.
“From your mother-in-law.”
He smiled.
“She really does appreciate me,” he said.
Meanwhile, the mother-in-law was already thinking about her next test.
A few days later, she invited her second son-in-law for a walk by the same river.
They hadn’t gone very far when she suddenly jumped into the water again.
“Help me!”
The second son-in-law rushed in, rescued her, and brought her safely back to shore.
The following morning, he opened his front door and nearly fell over.
A shiny Ford Fusion was parked in his driveway.
There was a note on the windshield.
“From your mother-in-law.”
He grinned from ear to ear.
“Wow. I guess I passed the test!”
Then came the third son-in-law’s turn.
And that’s when things got interesting.
3. FULL STORY — PART 2
The third son-in-law was invited to take the same walk.
He knew exactly what had happened to the other two men.
He also knew his mother-in-law had a strange habit of turning ordinary family outings into unexpected tests.
Still, he agreed to go.
They walked along the river together.
The mother-in-law chatted casually, acting as though nothing unusual was about to happen.
Then suddenly…
Splash!
She jumped into the river.
The third son-in-law stared at the water.
He watched her struggle to keep herself afloat.
For a moment, he looked around.
Then he calmly turned around and walked home.
He didn’t jump in.
He didn’t call for help.
He simply walked away.
The mother-in-law eventually made her way safely out of the river, absolutely furious.
“That ungrateful man!” she muttered.
She couldn’t believe it.
Her other two sons-in-law had immediately risked themselves to save her.
The third one had simply watched her fall in and walked away.
She spent the rest of the evening complaining about him.
“I knew there was something wrong with that man,” she told her husband. “He doesn’t care about me at all!”
Her husband listened quietly.
He didn’t say much.
The next morning, however, the third son-in-law stepped outside.
He expected nothing.
He wasn’t looking for a reward.
He wasn’t expecting an apology.
He certainly wasn’t expecting a brand-new vehicle.
But sitting in his driveway was something that made him stop dead in his tracks.
It was a shiny Cadillac Escalade.
He walked closer.
There was a note attached to the windshield.
He read it once.
Then he read it again.
The note said:
“From your father-in-law.”

The third son-in-law burst out laughing.
His wife came running outside.
“What happened?”
He pointed at the Cadillac.
She stared at it.
Then she saw the note.
“From Dad?”
Her husband nodded.
She looked completely confused.
“But why would Dad give you a Cadillac?”
Her husband smiled.
“I think your mother has been testing us.”
His wife slowly put the pieces together.
The Chevy Malibu.
The Ford Fusion.
The river.
The three sons-in-law.
Then she looked back at the Cadillac and suddenly understood.
Her father had known exactly what was going on.
He apparently had a very different opinion about how his wife should be treated.
When the mother-in-law finally came outside and saw the Cadillac, she was speechless.
She marched over to her husband.
“Why did you give him a Cadillac?”
Her husband calmly looked at her.
“Because I was there.”
“You were there?”
“Yes.”
“And you watched what happened?”
“I did.”
She crossed her arms.
“Well?”
He smiled.
“Your first son-in-law jumped into the river and saved you. You gave him a Malibu.”
She nodded.
“Your second son-in-law did the same thing. You gave him a Fusion.”
Again, she nodded.
“And the third one?”
“He didn’t jump in.”
“No.”
“He didn’t even try to rescue you.”
“No.”
Her husband smiled.
“So I gave him the Cadillac.”
The mother-in-law stared at him.
“Why?”
Her husband shrugged.
“Because he saved me from having to buy you another car.”
For a few seconds, nobody said a word.
Then the third son-in-law started laughing.
His wife covered her mouth, trying not to laugh too.
Even the mother-in-law eventually cracked a reluctant smile.
Her husband shook his head.
“You wanted to know which son-in-law was the nicest.”
He pointed toward the Cadillac.
“I think you found out which one was the smartest.”
5. ENDING
From that day forward, the mother-in-law never tested her sons-in-law again.
The first son-in-law kept his Chevy Malibu.
The second happily drove his Ford Fusion.
And the third son-in-law?
He became the proud owner of a Cadillac Escalade.
Whenever the three men got together, they joked about the strange family competition.
The first would say, “At least I was brave.”
The second would reply, “At least I got a new car.”
And the third would simply smile and say:
“Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is know when not to jump.”
Even the father-in-law would laugh.
And whenever his wife threatened to come up with another family test, he’d give her the same warning:
“Please don’t. We’re running out of driveways.”
