Right in the Groove
1. Title
Right in the Groove
2. FULL STORY — PART 1
The restaurant was unusually quiet that afternoon when a rather eccentric man walked through the front door and headed straight for the counter.
The waiter greeted him with a polite smile.
“Good afternoon. What can I get for you?”
The man studied the menu carefully, then leaned toward the waiter as though he were about to give very important instructions.
“I’ll have a cheeseburger,” he said. “Not too rare, not too well done. Right in the groove.”
The waiter blinked.
“Right in the groove?”
“Exactly,” the man replied confidently.
The waiter wrote it down.
“And I want some fries,” the man continued. “Not too crispy, not burnt. Right in the groove.”
The waiter nodded slowly.
“Got it.”
“And while you’re at it, throw in a shake. Not too thin, not too thick. Right in the groove.”
The waiter finished writing and smiled.
“One cheeseburger, fries, and a shake. All right in the groove.”
“That’s the idea,” the man said.
The waiter took the order back to the kitchen, trying not to laugh.
3. FULL STORY — PART 2
The cook listened carefully as the waiter repeated the unusual order.
“One cheeseburger—not too rare, not too well done. Fries—not too crispy, not burnt. And a shake—not too thin, not too thick.”
The cook raised an eyebrow.
“And apparently everything has to be ‘right in the groove.’”
The waiter laughed.
“Yep. That’s exactly what he said.”
The cook shook his head and got to work.
Five minutes later, the waiter returned to the dining area.
The eccentric customer was sitting patiently at his table, tapping his fingers and looking toward the kitchen.
The waiter approached him.
“Sir?”
“Yes?”
“I have a message from the cook.”
The man immediately sat up.
“Is my food ready?”
“Well… not exactly.”
The man frowned.
“What happened?”
The waiter struggled to keep a straight face.
“The cook says you can kiss his rear end…”
The man stared at him.
The waiter paused dramatically.
“…not to the left, not to the right…”
4. FULL STORY — PART 3
The man waited for the rest.
The waiter finally finished:
“But right in the groove.”
For a moment, the restaurant was completely silent.
Then the man’s eyes widened.
The waiter burst out laughing.
The customer stared at him for another second before realizing exactly what had happened.
“That cook has a sense of humor,” the man finally said.
“Oh, absolutely,” the waiter replied.
Just then, the cook came out of the kitchen carrying the cheeseburger, fries, and shake.
He placed everything carefully on the table.
“Your order, sir,” he said.
The man looked at the meal.
The burger was perfectly cooked.
The fries were just crispy enough.
The shake was exactly the right thickness.
The man took one bite of the burger and nodded approvingly.
“You know what?”
The cook waited.
“You really did get everything right in the groove.”
The cook smiled.
“I aim to please.”
5. ENDING
The man laughed, the waiter laughed, and even the cook finally cracked a smile.
It turned out the strangest order of the day had also produced the restaurant’s best joke.
And from that afternoon on, whenever anyone asked for something “right in the groove,” the staff knew exactly what they were talking about.
